The UK and Switzerland have signed an agreement on citizen rights following UK exit from the EU.

The agreement protects the rights of UK and Swiss nationals who have chosen to settle in each others country and will provide continuity to Swiss citizens already resident in the UK, and UK nationals already resident in Switzerland, when the UK is no longer subject to the EU-Swiss Free Movement of Persons Agreement.

 

This agreement will apply whether or not there is a deal with the EU.

In relation to social security coordination, part 3 of the agreement makes provision for the continued application of existing coordination arrangements including to

 

Continue the application of EU regulations on social security coordination across the whole of the UK from the end of the implementation period in a deal scenario; exit day in a no deal scenario for individuals in scope of the agreement

 

Enable social security rights to continue to flow from contributions paid by a UK national in Switzerland in the past but who does not live there at the specified date and

 

Enable citizens to continue to benefit from the coordination rules for as long as they remain within scope of the agreement - enabling aggregation rules applying to paid contributions and insured periods to continue
