April 2019 – Universal Credit and People with Severe Disabilities

02/04/2019

While the complex and often chaotic rollout of Universal Credit (UC) continues, special provisions now apply to people with severe disabilities.

From the 16 January 2019, anyone in receipt of severe disability premium (SDP) as part of their existing benefit entitlement, will remain on those benefits until they are notified by the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP) that their claims will be transferred to UC under the managed migration process. This is now thought likely to start from 2020. In effect this means that claimants will be able to make new claims for their existing benefits (including tax credits) until notified. This process is likely to be referred to as the SDP gateway.

For claimants entitled to SDP who naturally migrated to UC before the 16 January, there will be a transitional SDP amount paid to them as part of their UC. This will be paid at a fixed rate to those who continue to satisfy the criteria for SDP.
