August 2020 – Housing Costs and Social Landlords
The DWP has announced that it is to roll out a new system under which social landlords will receive managed payments of housing costs at the same time tenants receive their benefit payments.
A letter sent to social landlords dated 9 July 2020, states that following a successful small scale test of the system which aligns managed payments with a claimant universal credit assessment period, the DWP will begin rolling this feature out to all eligible landlords from August 2020.
Social landlords will receive the housing cost element at the same time as their tenants receive their universal credit payment. Landlords will also be able to access payment information via the Landlord Portal, where a managed payment is in place.
It is planned that local authorities will be contacted two weeks before their go-live date when they will also be issued with detailed guidance on how to use the new feature and obtain support if needed.
