January 2021 – Changes to Claims for People in Receipt of SDP

The Department of Works & Pensions has issued new guidance in relation to changes to Housing Benefit (HB) for claimants in receipt of the Severe Disability Premium (SDP).

The guidance confirms that the SDP Gateway - that allows claimants in receipt of an SDP or who have received it within the last month to claim legacy benefits, including HB, instead of Universal Credit - will be removed from 27 January 2021.

Claimants in receipt of SDP will have to claim Universal Credit and be considered for the new Transitional Element.

The DWP confirms that these changes mean that, going forwards only people living in temporary or specified accommodation will be allowed to make new claims for working age Housing Benefit.
