October 2023 – UK Government to be Reported to UN Watchdog

03/10/2023
The TUC is to report the government to the International Labour Organization (ILO) over new provisions under the Strikes (Minimum Service Level) Act 2023.

The TUC general secretary said the new Act had not been designed to resolve conflict at work but to escalate it and called the provisions unworkable, undemocratic and almost certainly in breach of international law.

Commenting on the new regime from the perspective of union bodies across Europe, ETUC general secretary added that the Act is a fundamental attack on the right to strike and will make the UK an international outlier on trade union rights and labour standards.

It should be noted that if the Labour Party wins the next election, it has said that it will repeal the Strikes Act and introduce an employment bill in the first 100 days that will include protections such as banning fire and rehire and the abuse of zero-hours contracts.
